Director Hajime Tabata has been very careful about what information he releases on the upcoming Square Enix video game Final Fantasy XV, but even the brief glimpses he’s given us so far look extremely promising. It has been made very clear that the feel of the game is a top priority and it has been with that focus in mind that the game’s monsters have gained an eerily lifelike quality. The game’s developers have been hard at work to create ecologies within the world of the game where in the beasts and monsters interact with their environment. The monster’s movements have also been carefully animated with their circumstances in mind. As Noctis Lucis Caelum, the game’s protagonist, the player will be able to locate and engage the monsters in real time battles with no loading time.

Monsters

The beasts range from harmless farm animals all the way through to epic sized monsters. Some of those are gentle giants that don’t aggravate into battle as easily as some of the smaller ones, but if you attack them when you’re not ready they will slay your team in seconds. Some of The developers have joked that killing the massive adamantoise can take up to 15 hours. All of the game’s monsters are found roaming around and interacting with their particular habitat in the game. They are programmed to react to the player based on their location, environment and story factors. Tabata has stayed true to the classic Final Fantasy bestiary by including series staples like wyverns, behemoths and iron giants but has adapted them to their environments. Some of the design aspects for the monsters look like they are straight out of the pages of long time series concept artist Yoshitaka Amano.

Dungeons

Final Fantasy XV takes place on a planet that consists of one enormous land mass. Tabata has meant the game to be seamlessly accessible partly so the gamer can experience the subtle changes in mood. You could be enjoying a natural scene by a lake watching a brontosaurus sized beast nibble on a tree and then enter a dungeon where everything seems off and horrific monsters act erratically. Tabata has been adamant about re-creating the dungeon experience and hopes to achieve a level of “strangeness” that will add depth and mood to the gaming experience.

A demo featuring early stages of the game is due out in March and will be bundled with the PSP game Final Fantasy Type-0 HD. Hajime Tabata has been vocal about wanting a simultaneous worldwide release but those details are still unconfirmed. Expect the hype to grow as Tabata promises that the little bit we do know is miniscule in comparison to the grandeur of Final Fantasy XV.
