The Division has been compared to Destiny for quite some time now. This isn’t entirely unjustified, as the two games do share many similarities. Comparisons between the two will begin to ramp up now, as according to a new data-mining leak, it seems Ubisoft’s upcoming open-world online shooter will take a page from Destiny‘s controversial leveling system.
Destiny originally had a soft level cap of 20, and to go beyond this cap, players had to acquire Light, a statistic inherent in gear. So, players would initially increase their levels through standard experience gain, but once they hit the experience point cap, had to get gear with a higher Light level. This basic leveling system seems to be one that The Division will employ.
Instead of Light, The Division will have Gear Score, a standard term and concept from various MMOs. The game has a level cap of 30, but obtaining non-vanity gear with high Gear Score will let players partake in the game’s most difficult challenges, which in turn will grant them the opportunity to gain even more powerful gear. “Improving your gear and increasing your overall Gear Score will grant your agent access to the most dangerous high end challenges. Your Average Gear Score can be found in the main menu and is visible to other players. It is the average value of all equipped gear pieces,” says the leak.
The Division is also set to have daily and weekly missions like Destiny. These missions will be available to players when they log into the game and will only be playable for a limited amount of time before new missions are added the following day or week. The missions can mostly be played solo, though some will require team work.
Given how popular Destiny is, it makes sense that Ubisoft would want to take features from that franchise and use it in The Division, even if it’s something similar to the controversial leveling system. We’ll see if the game will be able to shake off the Destiny comparisons and stand on its own when it’s released on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 tomorrow.
